Working from both the King James Bible and Robert Alter's translation, Crumb has been rewriting and reinterpreting the "Book of Genesis" from his own unique perspective as one of the world's most famous comic artists. Four years in the making, this book contains some of the Judeo-Christian world's most cherished and fundamental stories, all challenged and redrawn in his shocking, playful, and inimitable style.
Imagine the Creation, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and Noah commanding his ark, all brought to incredible life through the masterful strokes of Crumb's pen. This book is not only visually entrancing, however; Crumb's scandalous satire - sure to provoke the religious right - presents a complex, even subversive, narrative that calls for a significant re-examination of both the Bible's content and its role in our culture. His status as a provocative but legendary artist, determined to use his gift to challenge the status quo, will only be reaffirmed with "The Book of Genesis".
Robert Crumb was born in Philadelphia in 1943 and now hides out in the South of France with his wife and fellow artist, Aline Kominsky-Crumb. He began his amazing career forty years ago as an underground cartoonist, and is now one of the only underground artists to be critically recognised.
