All about this product:
Simply put, Black Hole is the magnum opus that Burns has been working toward for 20 years. Set in the '70s, this novel-length story - running to some 12 issues from Fantagraphics - bubbles with all of Burns's favourite themes, from disease to horror to the darkest undercurrents of adolescence.
A sexually-transmitted plague that only affects teenagers haunts the students at a Seattle high school. Causing grotesque deformities and skin conditions (the book's protagonist, Rob, has grown a tiny mouth in his throat that spouts cryptic messages), the most seriously afflicted are forced to set-up camps in the forest apart from "normal" society.
It can be disturbing and bleak but it is also absorbing, drawing the reader into this odd reality where frogs grow from ribs and the girl you love has a tail. With its themes of sexuality, violence, betrayal and disease this is not going to be for everyone, but for those familiar with Burns' work it will be a must-have.
