CG Challenge Machineflesh

With unreserved support from the Machineflesh finalists, planning for the first CG Challenge book started in late November 2004 with production starting in December. The format of the CG Challenge Machineflesh book features in-depth “making of” articles for each of the winning artists and the runners-up, and a gallery featuring the work of the artists who have received an honourable mention in the Challenge.

The goal of the CG Challenge series is to give equal representation to the “making of” material and the gallery of contestant’s work to reflect the learning focus of the Challenges themselves. The consistently high quality of entries to each Challenge also means that each CG Challenge book is guaranteed to have an amazing depth of great artwork using the same high production standards used for Ballistic Publishing’s other titles.

Machineflesh is the first book in the CG Challenge series featuring the artwork and techniques of artists participating in the online CG Challenges organized by CGNetworks.com and CGTalk.com. Machineflesh comprises of tutorials and artwork from the contestants of the Machineflesh Challenge.

The Challenge

The Machineflesh CG Challenge XV run by CGNetworks from 16 March-18 June 2004 was sponsored by Boxx Technologies, Wacom, NVIDIA, Discreet, The Gnomon Workshop and Ballistic Publishing. The Challenge received over 1,400 entries in the 3D category and over 700 2D entries, making it almost twice as large as the previously run Challenge, and setting the record as the largest online art contest ever run!

Combining two popular themes (characters and machines), contestants were tasked to create an image depicting a mechanically altered or enhanced organic lifeform.
