We Are Comics & Comics Are For Everyone…. essential reading.
Positive messages about comics are good. Sadly all too often the message from the vocal, bigoted, ignorant minority is the thing we hear about.
Writer Janelle Asselin has become merely the most recent target of ridiculous, nasty, vile attack from those horrible, bigoted idiots. All she did was write an article that dared to criticise a comic cover for depicting an underage teen girl completely inappropriately. For daring to do this she gets insulted and threatened, up to and including violence and rape threats.
It’s not good enough to say we think things should change. It’s time we all took responsibility. It’s time they did change.
Comics are for everyone, a simple message, and maybe one that’s coming through now. Women, Men, Girls, Boys, everyone means everyone. There are no true fans, no fake fans, just comic fans.
You don’t like that? Get out of comics. We don’t want you
You have friends with that attitude? Call them on it.
You hear stuff going on that demeans half the reading population? Do something about it.
Comics are for EVERYONE.
It’s beginning to get around. About bloody time.
This, from Jordie Bellaire, colourist of note on many titles, sums it up just perfectly, positive message perfectly presented…..
And this website WE ARE COMICS is doing something similar, the We Are Comics team of Rachel Edidin, Arturo Garcia, and Elle Collins, plus Jen Vaughn on social media have set up a tumblr asking for reader submissions, something to expose the lie for once and for all. Comics are not just for you and your ignorant, bigoted buddies. Comics really are for us all, like it or not….
We are comics: creators, publishers, retailers, readers; professionals and fans. And we are a lot more diverse than you might think.
We Are Comics is a campaign to show—and celebrate—the faces of our community, our industry, and our culture; to promote the visibility of marginalized members of our population; and to stand in solidarity against harassment and abuse.
It’s no longer good enough to accept these things. Speak out, speak up, listen to those telling you it’s wrong. COMICS ARE FOR EVERYONE.
