Over the weekend as the Glasgow Comic-Con was being enjoyed we also had the 2014 Scottish Independent Comic Book Alliance (SICBA) awards, the fourth year of those particular gongs. And in a pretty amazing feat Colin Bell and Neil Slorance totally triumphed in all four categories with Dungeon Fun, winning the Best Comic Book or Graphic Novel (supported by CCA: Glasgow), Best Artist (supported by Homecoming Scotland), Best Writer (supported by Black Hearted Press) and Best Cover (supported by Williams Bros. Brewing Co.), while the Outstanding Contribution to Comics special award went to the great Dreddfather himself, John Wagner.
A pretty amazing feat to win all four categories, I think you will agree – huge congratulations to Colin and Neil, and for those of you who haven’t read the wonderful, all-ages Dungeon Fun yet I can tell you we loved it. In fact we loved it so much both Richard and I ended up posting reviews on the first issue (Richard’s review here, and my review here).
“We’re thrilled and humbled. For Scotland’s comic readers to embrace an all-ages comic in this way is an incredibly encouraging sign not only to ourselves, but hopefully to children all over the country who may be prompted to pick up and start reading comics as a result. The SICBAs have fast become a well-respected champion for Scotland’s comic creators in a relatively short space of time, and tonight’s win is not a responsibility we take lightly. Neil and I are proud to be ambassadors for Scotland’s burgeoning comic scene for the coming year,” Colin Bell on his and Neil Slorance’s SICBA triumph.
With the second issue just launched at the weekend’s Glasgow Comic-Con, and to celebrate this amazing win Do Gooder Press are making the digital version of Dungeon Fun #1 free to download all this week – you can grab it here and see just why we loved it so much. Lovely to see a comic that can be enjoyed by younger readers as well as adults getting such attention.
