Comics: Stripped announces Mini Comics Fair line up for Edinburgh Book Fest

The news from the Stripped segment of this August’s Edinburgh International Book Festival continues to get better and better. As we’ve already reported the stellar line up of events, talks and workshops takes in new and established talent, comics for adults and younger readers and even the small press community. Today the Stripped blog announced the line up for the Mini Comic Fair at the Book Fest, drawing on a slew of Scottish-based creators and self publishers from our vibrant small press comics community, including Stephen Goodall, Team Girl Comics Neil Slorrance, Black Hearted Press, Edward Ross, Braw Books, Metaphrog, Poison Pixie Press and more. The Mini Comics Fair runs from 24th to 25th August in 5 Charlotte Square (splendid Georgian building directly across the road from the main Book Festival area in the gardens in the centre of the Square, only a couple of doors from the official residence of the First Minister of the Scottish Parliament, as it happens, very swish!) and entry is free. I’ve already said several times in our build up to the Festival coverage how delighted I am at the level of support and enthusiasm for the medium our friends at the Book Fest have shown, and I think making sure they include the small press gang in the most high profile literary event in the country is going above and beyond, so again kudos to Kirsten, Janet and all the rest of the Book Fest team.

I’ve been talking to the Festival folk for many months and can confirm the desire to include the small press community and show them off to the massive reading audience of the Festival is one they’ve had pretty much since the start of planning for what would become Stripped, which gives you an idea how behind the whole comics segment they are – quite wonderful to see and what a showcase for the small press gang, not just at the Book Festival but in Edinburgh when the Fringe and Festival are going on and the city becomes the festival capital of the world, with thousands upon thousands of culture vultures descending on our ancient city for weeks throughout August to take in all sorts of artistic events. Obviously living here I am a little biased, but there really isn’t anything quite like Edinburgh during Festival season – the city’s population almost doubles for weeks (yes, that can drive locals mad as they try to get around town, but at the same time the sheer energy is like no other festival on Earth), there are hundreds of shows of all sorts going on daily. We’ve always shouted out loud about the quality and innovation of the small press in the UK here on the blog, and I am super chuffed to see them being included in our annual cultural blowout when the world comes to town. Comic folks in the Edinburgh and surrounding area, please do get down and give them some support and take advantage of the rest of the Stripped programme too, those of your further afield, there’s a great short holiday trip idea for you! I should also add audiences will have the dubious pleasure of seeing me on stage during Stripped as well as I’ve been invited to chair a couple of the events – more on that later, no doubt!
