hartlepool monkey Moreau Lupano 01 knockabout

Knockabout’s Tony Bennet drops us a line to let us know that Moreau and Lapano’s Le Singe de L’Hartlepool (soon to be published in English by Knockabout as The Hartlepool Monkey, see here for a preview on the blog) has been awarded the “Rendez-vous de l’histoire” at one of the largest history events in France, held in the city of Blois. As Tony points out, as with the Costa biography win for Mary and Bryan Talbot this is not a specifically comics-based award, it’s chosen by a panel of eminent historians, so again we can take this as a sign of the way the medium is being more broadly accepted and taken seriously in the wider literary world. Good to see! I’ve been having a sneaky advance read of Hartlepool Monkey and highly recommend it, a possibly historical, possibly mythological event cast in the highest Absurd tradition, with hints of Scarfe around some of the art. I’ll post up a proper review soon, but terrific to see it winning a major award outside the comics sphere.
