Best Cover EVER? – Martin Eden

The quest to discover the Best Cover EVER? continues. Or, if you prefer, here’s another comiker picking the cover they think is the Best Cover EVER?

This time it’s both a welcome return to Jaime Hernandez, a welcome return to Love & Rockets, and a return to the blog for Martin Eden, the creator of the excellent Spandex series, whose 7th issue is due in November at Thought Bubble, and whose first three issues were recently collected by Titan in the gorgeous looking hardback Spandex: Hard And Fast

Love And Rockets Volume 1, Issue 1, Fantagraphics Books, 1992, art by Jaime Hernandez

After a lot of thought, I’ve decided that my favourite cover of all time is Love and Rockets #1. There’s just something about it, something that grabs you, draws you in, makes you say ‘what is this?’. It’s the perfect cover to a series’ first issue – it’s just so intriguing and well drawn. The characters don’t appear in the series, but they look like they all have an amazing story to tell (especially the ‘normal’ lady who may or may not be Maggie – it doesn’t matter either way).

It’s such a simple idea, but so well crafted, so beautiful to look at. And Jaime Hernandez’ art on this cover hints at the stunning artwork we are to be treated to over the next few decades – the effortless character dynamics and the lifelike poses and the general amazingness. So good.

Thanks to Martin for those, always a pleasure to see more Love And Rockets on here. Interestingly, Jaime has reused/homaged the cover a couple of times; with the very first Fantagraphics collection in 1985, and subsequently, with Love & Rockets Volume 2 issue 1 in 2001.

You can get hold of those wonderful first Jaime Hernandez Love & Rockets comics in the collection Maggie The Mechanic.
