Clarion South

Marianne de Pierres tells me that she will be taking part in the 2009 Clarion South Writers Workshop, along with a number of other respected science fiction and fantasy writers, including Kelly Link (who appears on so many awards lists I’ve lost track) and Margo Lanagan. Some readers will already be familiar with the Clarion concept, but for those who aren’t here’s the official description:

“Clarion South Writers Workshop is an intensive six week residential workshop for writers preparing for a professional career in speculative fiction. It has sometimes been described as “boot camp” for spec fic writers and is the most intensive professional development program of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Some of our own Vision-listers are Clarion South alumni, including Cat Sparks, Michele Cashmore, Richard Pitchforth and Karin Hannigan, and some our most acclaimed authors have been tutors, including Kim Wilkins and Sean Williams. Clarion South runs every two years in Brisbane. The tutors for the next workshop, commencing January 2009, are:

Week 1: Sean Williams
Week 2: Marianne de Pierres
Week 3: Margo Lanagan
Week 4: Jack Dann
Week 5: Kelly Link & Gavin J. Grant
Week 6: Kelly Link & Gavin J. Grant”

That’s a formidable line up of writing tutors for any budding SF&F authors in Australia – applications for the workshop open in February and more details can be found on the website. I should also mention that Jeff VanderMeer, himself no stranger to holding a writing workshop, asks one of the above authors, Margo Lanagan, a few questions on his Ecstatic Days blog. Jeff specifically mentions Margo’s short story ‘Singing My Sister Down’ from her collection Black Juice, which is one of those stories which has stuck in my head ever since I first read it, a story imbued with that finely balanced mixture of wonder and dread that writers like Ray Bradbury combine so deftly in their short work – a very highly recommended collection.
